Missouri Contemporary Ballet

Island Moving Co. welcomes companies from around the country for eight nights of shared performances, talk backs with the choreographers, master classes and more, at the intimate Great Friends Meeting House in the heart of Newport.

Our residency company this year, for the Great Friends Touring Project, is Missouri Contemporary Ballet.  MCB joins us for two weeks of creative time in our studios and shared performances.  They will also perform in the all-festival piece choreographed by John Mark Owen, premiering July 21 & 22.  Other guests will include John Mark Owen Presents from New York; Providence Ballet Theatre and Daniel McCusker Dance Project from Boston.  The Festival begins with a gala 30th anniversary celebration on July 13th, with cocktails, dinner, dancing and a fabulous performance at the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport.  Great Friends Dance Festival patrons can this year choose to purchase a Festival Pass for $250, including tickets to our The World is Your Oyster gala on July 13th, master classes with the visiting choreographers, access to rehearsals and a pass for all eight performances.

Handful of Pearls at Newport's Casino Theatre

May 12, 2012 at 7:30pm

Island Moving Co. returns to the lovely and newly renovated Casino Theatre at the International Tennis Hall of Fame for one performance this spring.  Returning from our tour to Pasadena in April, the Company will present the Newport premiere of “Noon,” choreographed by the Pasadena Dance Theatre’s Associate Director, Laurence Blake.  The dancers will also perform  Miki Ohlsen’s “Ruth…less” and an excerpt from her popular tango piece, “Hora Cero.”  And they’ll also be presenting works they themselves have been choreographing, bringing the Company back to its roots as a forum for dancers to explore choreographic ideas on each other.  Miki Ohlsen has chosen dances by Shane Farrell, Christine Sandorfi and Carol Tang from among pieces the dancers have been crafting since Nutcracker time.  The evening continues the Company’s celebration of its pearl anniversary, the 30th, and will include an opportunity to join the Board of Directors for cocktails before the show as well as dinner with the dancers afterward, both at the Canfield House right next door.  Tickets to the performance only are $25, with student rates available.  For cocktails and the performance the ticket is $50 and for the whole evening, with the prix fixe dinner at the Canfield House, the price is $75.

See the "30th Anniversary" page under "Performances" for more information.

Opening Weekend at Rosecliff
March 3 & 4, 2012

The dancers and Miki Ohlsen premiere a new ballet for children (and their adults) based on Mother Goose rhymes and using the magical backdrop of Rosecliff for an interactive performance experience.  "Mother Goose at Rosecliff" will feature dances choreographed by the Company's dancers, moving from room to room with live accompaniment by a minstrel fiddler and commentary provided by Mother Goose herself.   Join the dancers after each show for birthday cupcakes and photo opportunities.  Appropriate for children as young as three.
March 3 & 4 at 3pm.

On Saturday night, the Island Moving Co. celebrates thirty years of collaboration and new choreography with a repertory performance in Rosecliff''s ballroom.  The evening includes a champagne toast and a cash bar at intermission.
